Travel is therapy

A vacation is what you take when you can no longer take what you’ve been taking.

– Earl Wilson

The hardest part about taking a vacation is often giving ourselves permission to take time away from the busy-ness of our business, whatever that happens to look like on any given day.

Not much has changed in the century since American entertainment columnist Earl Wilson famously quipped, “A vacation is what you take when you can no longer take what you’ve been taking.” Wilson’s prescient words aptly expressed our own need, if not our desperation, for a break from the hustle and bustle of modern day life. Let’s face it: the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness – the American Dream – in the 21st Century can be overwhelming if not exhausting. Well said, Mr. Wilson.

Sometimes we need to turn off more than our computers to find our way back to healthy, wealthy and wise. The closest thing to a “pause” button we have as humans is a vacation. Travel can be an effective first step onto a path that resets body rhythm, renews the mind, awakens the spirit, revives the heart…or simply reconnects us with loved ones, creation, or our Creator.

Travel has become therapy for busy people juggling the demands of career and family or struggling with the stagnation of routine. Sometimes all it takes to see a new path or find a better way is a change of scenery.

Life is short. America is beautiful. Our planet is filled with fascinating people, breath-taking beauty, intriguing mysteries, and magical wonders. There is a fabulous journey awaiting anyone willing to pack their bags and go.
